Living With Pain For Years
I worked at Disney’s ABC for 35 years, supervising costume making for TV series and shows. With a lot of stress and exhaustion from my work, I started experiencing back pain very often. For more than two decades, the first thing I must do after waking up was doing a “warm up” by rocking from side to side, applying heating pad or patting my body before slowly getting out of bed. In severe cases, the pain was so excruciating that I couldn’t even get out of bed. After an M.R.I. exam, I learned that my fourth and fifth lumbar discs had herniated, pressing on the sciatic nerve. I had tried acupuncture, but the effect was very minimal. The doctor advised me to have an operation but warned me that the pain might still be with me for the rest of my life, after hearing that, I declined the surgery.
To make matters worse, 17 years ago, my knee began to swell and the pain was unbearable. Once I sat down, I would need some assistance to help me stand up, and I walked unsteadily and limped like a lame duck. The doctor said it was caused by bone spurs. He only asked me to take some calcium tablets and other medication and told me to have more rest and not to exhaust myself.
Recovering Health Through Meditation
In February , I came across a magazine called Meditation and Health. I was especially attracted by the meditation testimonials. So, with hope in my heart, I checked out San Francisco Bodhi Meditation Center, and I must say, I fell in love with the meditation from day one.
The next day, I began to learn the Energy Bagua. In the beginning, my legs were very painful, and there were several times I wanted to give up, but as the Grand Master JinBodhi said: “as long as we continue to practice, there will be harvest.” Those words inspired me all the time to not give up. So, from Monday to Friday, I would practice Energy Bagua for an hour each time, and I would also practice other Bodhi meditation methods such as “The Meditation of Greater Illumination”, all together I practiced three hours a day. Every time there was a meditation class, I would actively sign up for it.
A year and half had passed. In August of next year, I realized that my back pain had disappeared, so did my knee pains. My legs became stronger and more relaxed, allowing me to walk steadily like a normal person. What made me feel so happy was that I could return to dance, something I had to give up for quite a long time because of the pain. Meditation not only made my pain go away, but even old age dark spots on my hands were miraculously disappeared!
Before, I always felt tired and had to take a nap every day. Now, I am full of energy that I no longer need a nap. In February of 2017, I visited my nephews whom I hadn’t seen for 4 years, they were very surprised at my good health and said, “Aunt, the last time I saw you, your back was hunched, and you swung from side to side when you walked. Now your back looks straight, you walk steadily, and you look so young and strong!” They all gave me thumbs up, I felt like I was on cloud 9.
Life Is Enriched By Meditation
Right after I retired from Disney’s ABC in Hollywood, I kept up my old habits like growing flowers, reading books, singing and dancing, but deep inside I often felt lost and empty, I asked myself: What should I do with my life now?
Since joined Bodhi Meditation, I have not only meditated every day, but also volunteered to help and care for others. I feel like my life has become fulfilling and meaningful, and in the process, I have found true happiness. I’m so grateful for Bodhi Meditation! It has changed my life!
I sincerely hope that everyone can be free from illness and enjoy well-being, just like me.
